Western PA OER Training Day

Thursday, July 11th at the CCAC North Campus 

Western PA OER Training Day on Thursday, July 11th from 9am-2pm at the CCAC North Campus (8701 Perry Highway Pittsburgh, PA 15237). The event is free, and lunch will be provided. We are planning to cover OER Basics, Creative Commons basics, tips for searching for OERs, and work on developing or refining strategic plans for campus OER initiatives. These topics will be covered in proportion to the interest expressed in the initial survey.

This event is open to anyone who has interest or involvement with OERs, including librarians, faculty, staff, administration, advisers, students, etc. Please feel free to invite anyone who you think would benefit from this training.

If you have a particular resource, tip or experience that would help other OER advocates, we invite you to share! Please indicate the topic on the registration form.

"Effectively Encouraging Use of OER on Your Campus"

with Nicole Finkbeiner, Director of Institutional Relations at Rice University’s OpenStax

Held March 28th, 2019, Ms. Finkbeiner used her experience working with colleges and universities across the country to outline the key components of a successful OER initiative. She covered key metrics, real-world examples of successful strategies, and suggestions on how to adapt an OER initiative to your specific budget and campus culture.

"Affordable Learning Pennsylvania: Update and Next Steps"

On February 13, 2019, the ALPa Steering Committee provided an update on the Affordable Learning project and introduced the OER Specialists. Topics covered included a look at the evolving governance structure, a preview of activity planned for 2019, coming opportunities for engagement, introductions to our ALPa OER Specialists, and time for questions and suggestions.

"Learn to Lead Affordable Learning Initiatives on Your Campus"

The Affordable Learning PA project is now a consortium member of the Open Textbook Network. Two training workshops by the experts at OTN were offered in September 2018 to form the foundation for creating a community of practice, centered around building OER learning content, for affordable learning in Pennsylvania and the surrounding region.

Each workshop covered areas such as: 

  • Using tools and resources for open textbook programming
  • Strategies for addressing common challenges
  • Identifying obstacles to open textbook adoptions
  • Developing incentives for successful programs on your local campus
  • In-person networking opportunities and more
  • Agenda
